The Post Where I Talk About Sports and Give Away a King Cake

Yes, we're all a tad bit excited down here about the Saints going to the Superbowl.

I was pumped full of adrenaline last night and could barely sleep due to that crazy game. But, all in all, the Saints pulled it off.

I honestly thought I'd never see this happen in my lifetime. I remember watching the Saints play every weekend in my home as a child, then a teenager, then an adult (except for those six years we lived in Oklahoma). And they lost MOST of the time. But, fans continued to support them and love them ... well, except for wearing bags over their heads and calling them the "'Aints."  Hey, they still watched the game. That should count for loyalty.

This is what the people of Louisiana have waited for. And, when I say "people," I mean ALL people ... the sisters too.

However, some people want to steal this moment from the Saints by saying things like the Vikings got robbed of the game due to bad calls by the refs.

Just like in all things, somebody's got to weigh in with their opinion.

Listen up ...

Refs make good and bad calls in every game, in every sport. That's part of the game. Get over it. It's not gonna change.

Heck, you should see some of the calls from know-it-all teenage soccer refs at nine-year-old girls' soccer games. Ridiculous.

But, that's just it ... it's part of the game.

THE SAINTS WON! And, that's final.

Now, not another word. Let the Saints and the people of Louisiana have their moment.

Brett Favre ... it's OK. You've had some good years despite the fact that your last play was an interception that led to the Saints' victory. You win some, you lose some. You've had a good run. Don't go away mad.

Anyhow ... I know you want me to get to the point about the giveaway, right? Because I'm sure most of you non-Louisianians don't care about the Saints.

While watching the NFC Championship game, I spent five hours making this ...

Two homemade king cakes. Yeah, I get these wild hairs sometimes and want to face a challenge head on.

I know they're not the prettiest cakes you've ever seen, but, they were yummy, especially hot out of the oven.

Don't worry. These are not the king cakes I'm offering.

No. It'll be a good 'ol Meche's king cake shipped from me to anywhere in the USA.

It's time for my Annual King Cake Giveaway.

The Rules:
(Read carefully so you don't get disqualified.)

Last year I limited the giveaway to those who had never had king cake, but this year, in honor of the Saints' victory, the giveaway is open to anyone ... Native Louisianians or not ... Southerners and Northerners.

All you have to do is leave a comment on this post and tell me what flavor filling you'd like ...
Cream cheese (my favorite)
Bavarian cream
Pecan Praline

And, also, in your comment, tell me where you're from and an email address or way to contact you.

And, just because I'm feeling generous, I'm gonna throw in a pack of Community Coffee for you to enjoy with your king cake.

You may only enter once. However, if you post about the giveaway and link back to me on your blog, you get two entries.

Deadline to enter will be Saturday at midnight.

I will randomly pick a winner on Sunday and announce the winner Monday morning.

Happy Commenting!

Looking forward to the big match-up between your Saints and my Colts! I'm so glad you didn't exclude Colt's fans from your giveaway :-)

I think I would like to go with your favorite, cream cheese filled.

I've still never had a King cake, but I really want to try one. I'm going to trust your judgment and say cream cheese sounds delightful. I heart cream cheese so it's probably a good choice. I won't mention where my football loyalties lie because I'd really like to win that cake! :)

oh my goodness there are two many flavors to choose from but I think I would love the Pecan Praline (since I'm the only one who likes nuts in my food, I know I will be the only one to enjoy this delicious looking pastry LOL). I'm from mid-Michigan and my email is lutztribe@gmail.com

I have heard so much about the cream cheese filled one...that's what I would choose!!!

one of my LA friends here gave me my 1st taste of King Cake last week. her daughter drove one up, freshly baked that day, for me to try...how sweet is that?!! It was yummy!!

Cream cheese is my fav, but I am sometimes partial to apple. I'm sooo excited you're opening this up to Louisiana-natives. GO SAINTS!!!

Kings cakes are yummy. We received one several years ago from a client. We were very surprised to see the hidden surprise inside.

We, being from Central, Illinois did not have a clue to the meaning of the Kings cake.

Could you please explain the Kings cake meaning for those who don't know?

I am very happy for your Saints. We have a friend who is obsessed with the Saints. He has had a really hard year, so it made me so happy for him to be at the game the other night when they won.

I have never had a King Cake. I would love to try one. I think I would like Bavarian cream for the filling because that is my favorite filling in pastries. I live in TN. (You know the place where the majority of the people pictured in your Wal-Mart post live :) I promise none of those in the pictures were me though ) My email is linked to my name google id.

Oooh. So many to choose from. I am going to go with Cream Cheese. Since I have never had a King Cake, I will take your word from it! :)

Hey Julie,

I have a post about the whole meaning. Look under giveaways. It should be there from last year. Or maybe holidays.

I keep hearing about these King Cakes.....Cream cheese or bavarian cream....or cinnamon :)

My hubby is from MN, and he is quite disappointed....but recognizes that the Vikings didn't deserve to win that game the way they played. However, he is very bummed.

If MB's favorite is cream cheese, that's what this WI gal would love, too!

Thanks a bunch! Go Saints!

I just saw a recipe for king cake in my taste of home magazine and briefly pondered trying to make one -- pick me so I don't have to go to the trouble!! ;)

I don't know how I can choose since each of those flavors sounds delish so I'll go with the cream cheese since it's your fave.

Congrats on the win!

I have never tried a king cake, but always wanted to. I would trust an expert and try the cream cheese! I am a Minnesotan, not a huge football fan so I am not as upset about the loss as some. I love you blog, especially when you talk about food from your part of the US.

Jackie @ Our Moments Our Memories said...

Girl, that was some game. I admit to rooting for the Vikings because I think they would've been easier for my Colts to beat in the Superbowl...but this will be a great matchup.

I so don't NEED this King cake sitting on my thighs, but oh how I want it. Cream cheese, please. Although all of those fillings sound fabulous. Thanks, girl.

Wendi@Every Day Miracles said...

OOOHHHH it sounds so good! Cream cheese for sure. I could eat cream cheese for breakfast, lunch, and supper... :)

Looking forward to the super bowl!! I'll be thinking of all of you NOLA girls!

As for the "call of the game," I agree. It's all part of it. Do you know how many times my DH has SWORN that the bad calls are ALL on the Cowboys? Noooooooope.

And the important part: the King Cake. I've never had one. I want one. And since I've read several of your foodie posts, I will trust you and say, Cream Cheese, Please.

I'm from Texas, live in Georgia, and my email is prov31ladynt at windstream dot net.

Thank you for the opportunity!

Oh, I'd love a king cake! So much so that even if I don't win, I think I'll make one for my super bowl party. I don't like football very much, my husband will be out of town but I'm having a super bowl party just so I can make tons of delcious not-so-good for you food and pig out! I'll go w/the cream cheese filling, since I really love cream cheese and it's the one that gets your vote too.

I won last year :) Cream cheese all the way baby.

I've never been a Saints fan (Packers here) BUT I've rooted for them now against the Cardinals (because they beat my Packers) and Vikings because I DO NOT LIKE THE VIKINGS EVER EVER EVER!

And I'm rooting for them in the Super Bowl...it's their turn to win. It's only fair...

Bad ref calls...I say Pffffff. Go Drew Brees. :)

I've heard of the King cakes before but I've never tried one. All those filling sound scrumptious but I guess I'll go with the cream cheese too. It sounds really good.

I've never had King Cake, but I have a feeling the cream cheese filling would just rock my socks! We have nothing like it here in greater downtown Scottsville, Virginia. (Scottsville is a tiny town- about the size of a postage stamp in central Virginia, in case you were curious.)

Oh! And I announced your giveaway on my blog (and linked back to you, of course) http://everydaylily.blogspot.com/2010/01/weird-wednesday-1-27-10.html

Should divine favor cause my name to be drawn for such a lovely thing as a King Cake, you can email me at lily.beth.smith@gmail.com . :)

I don't NEED the cake (cream cheese please and I hope I win it) but I NEED the shirt! I don't have a Saints shirt!!

I would like for the Saints to win the Super Bowl. I would buy a tshirt and cut it in half (stay with me). Then I would cut a University of Alabama National Championship shirt in half, sew them together, and voila! Doubly blessed fan of champions!!

CREAM CHEESE - you can never get enough of the best king cake flavor around.

I am from Lafayette and I really enjoy reading your blog - heck you inspired me to try the thirty day shred (which i will need again after Mardi gras) -

And though my three girls have jerseys, I don't even have a Saints t-shirt so I am keeping my fingers crossed as I sip my hot and fresh community coffee!
