The Best & Worst Things About Kids' Birthday Parties

A luau in July in Louisiana - Temperature at least 100 degrees and that's a cold front. This picture was taken before my make-up melted off my face.

Keeping your husband happy while tween girls dominate and he's outnumbered ... wait ... he's always outnumbered.

Goodie Bags - Why do we even do these things? They're just a waste of time and filled with junk that will eventually get thrown away. Time to boycott the goodie bags.

Pretending you're a professional cake decorator - The best I can do ... pitiful.

Asking your children at least 20 times to stop eating all the food before the guests get there

Being the parent in charge when other parents just drop off their kids - I had one child whose parents didn't pick her up until 30 minutes after the party was over (same child that showed up 45 minutes late), causing us to miss G-Force (also same child whose parents did the same thing last year). I'm sorry, but consistent tardiness is just pure selfishness and inconsiderate. Would you invite this child again next year?

Having to invite every child in your kids' classes whether they're friends or not (same child from above) - I'm glad we don't have to do this as adults.

When your child becomes too "cool" to play games and just wants to hang out (even though the younger sister really wants to do the limbo)

Cake Batter - Seriously, Beau and I each ate about a cup of each flavor. I think I actually love the batter more than the cake. La Petite Belle helped with the licking.

Gift Cards to Target - Hoping that your child only spends about half of it and you can use the rest. Don't act like you've never done it.

Parties you can drop your kids off to (but you pick them up on time)

Leftover cake

Seeing your child happy - Makes it all worth it.

All in all, K Belle had a great party!

I just blinked and my little baby girl turned 12. Hold onto every day tightly.

We were obviously separated at birth.

Oh, how I totally agree with the goodie bags! I did them for 2 years and realized that I ended up with more than I gave away because we always forgot to hand them out. Not to mention the stress of buying just the right stuff to put in them that you hope will be appreciated and not just thrown in the trash!

Brings back memories of all the pool parties my girls and I gave when they were little. It's about all you can do in July in Louisiana. My first baby is now 17 and I want to hold on as long as I can.

30 minutes late two years in a row?? That's just awful.

Getting a kick out of the 12 candles on the cupcake!

I always gave my kids the choice of a big gift or a party (which costs as much as a big gift!). 2 of mine always chose the big gift (my little hermits) one always chose the party (but at least it was just once a year!)

looks like a great time!

I'm with ya on the goodie bags. I finally switched to a brown paper sack with the kids' names written on the front - FANCY. I don't put anything in it...we beat a pinata to death at the end of the party and they get what they get. What happened to the days where you show up to a party and expect nothing but some fun and maybe some cake?

Looks like a fun time even with some of the "problems". Happy Birthday K Belle!!

For Hubby's 40th, our end time was 4:30PM. I wanted time to clean up and get stuff put away, get the kids in bed and have you know ALONE time...his cousins showed up at 5:30PM brought more booze, asked where all the food was and stayed well after midnight.
I'm with you on the goodie bags and tardiness, drives me nuts.

Happy birthday to your sweet girl - she's gorgeous.

And DOWN WITH GOODIE BAGS. I boycotted last year, and felt a vague sense of guilt because I didn't hand the little bags of junk out. But seriously - they go straight in the trash. So why bother?

I love that last picture!

i will boycott goodie bags with you. i have stopped giving 'bags' and instead this past year, gave each kid a book from the dollar store.

i dont understand why you have to invite the whole class....unless invitations are handed out rather than mailed.
i would boycott that too! and dont invite the late kid anymore. either that, or call the mom and tell her she can pick her kid up outside the movie theatre.
mercy is not one of my spiritual gifts. ;-)
