Five-Second Rule or How dirty is that piece of Sushi?

So, I dropped a small piece of a sushi roll on the floor the other night. It was on the floor, maybe two seconds, before I picked it up and ate it. I may have shocked my friends that were around.

But, number one ... I had just mopped the floor.

Number two, it's SUSHI for goodness sake!

Number three, the Five-Second Rule.

Isn't that a proven theory? You know, the rule I'm talking about. If you drop something on the floor, and pick it up within five seconds of hitting the ground, it's OK to eat. Right? WRONG!

DISCLAIMER: Before you go thinking I'm a bad mommy, I do not allow my children to eat off the floor or anything. But, my granddaddy always said, "A little bit of dirt never hurt anybody." I think it may actually make you stronger ... your immune system and all. Right?

Imagine my disappointment when I found out that the 5-second rule is not a real fact. Or DUH!

Yep! It's not.

Someone did research by contaminating tiles with bacteria and dropping food (gummi bears & cookies) on the tiles. And yes, the bacteria got on the food upon contact. You can read all about it at Snopes.com.

Although in my research, I did find another study that said you have as long as 30 minutes to eat something off the floor. You can find that one at boston.com. I don't know about that one. Sounds scary ... 30 minutes, that's quite a long time.

I guess we'll never know.

Lesson learned: If you're going to eat off the floor, make sure the food in question is worth the price you may pay. In my case, it was.

I'd rather lick the floor than eat sushi ;)

It's actually 10 seconds in my house.

But I have to agree with Sarah. If it was sushi...it would be sittin' there for a really long time!

I was relieve to read that the sushi fell on your floor and not the restraunt floor! WHEW!

I don't really freak out about things like that! Have four little boys under 6 there is plenty of snacks that find their way to the floor.

As for the sushi - never had it - from the sounds of things from Tracie or Sarah - maybe I don't want to!

Glad you could rescue your sushi! If you were at my house at the dinner table the dogs would have beat you to it!

I don't allow my daughter to eat off of the floor either; she just helps herself when I'm not looking. ;)

Sushi would sit on the floor in my house too. But if it was Chickfila....well - that's a diffrent story!

You know, they're blaming a lot of allergies in children now on moms who keep their environments too clean! Perhaps conventional wisdom is purty smart!
